Air Filters 101

How many there are and what they do. There are two, in most Toyota and Scion vehicles: an engine air filter and a cabin air filter. The engine filter protects a vehicle's motor and its parts from things like road debris. The cabin filter protects a vehicle's heating and air conditioning systems from things like dust and pollen.

What they're made of. Usually, either synthetic paper, metal, foam, or cotton, often flat, circular, or cylindrical in design and sometimes even washable and reusable. No material is permanent, though; you will need to change both kinds eventually. Keep an eye out for the symptoms that it's time to do so.

Signs you should replace them. The obvious include clogs (and the accompanying obstructed airflow), damaged or worn-out filter media, and warnings on the dash like the Check Engine light. Others range from worsening fuel economy and unusual noises like engine misfires to whistling or other abnormal sounds coming from the interior vents. You may also experience a loss of engine power and trouble accelerating and see black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe. Also, a stale or dirty odor may pervade the cabin. See these, and you should inspect and change the filters accordingly.

When to change them otherwise. Do it annually, every 12,000 miles at least, and at most, every 15,000 miles. Be sure to check your owner's manual for further info; it'll have an air filter maintenance schedule you can refer to. When you buy new ones, get the genuine article.
