Brake Pads
Brake Pads 101
What they are. They're the textured plates on the brake calipers in your Toyota or Scion vehicle's disc brake system.
What they do. They rub against the brake rotors, producing the friction that slows the vehicle's wheels down and stops its tires.
What types there are. Organic (for the everyday), metallic (also called semi-metallic), ceramic, and the ultimate in durability and stopping power, carbon-fiber.
When to change them. That depends on how you drive and where. Most often, though, it's every 40,000 miles or so. You shouldn't let replacement go any longer than every 50,000 miles, though. You can also take care of it when certain symptoms appear.
The signs they're going bad. Look for damaged or worn-out pad surfaces, rotors that are warped, and warning lights flashing on the dashboard and listen for whining and grinding noises. Feel for vibrations during braking, and keep an eye out for slowing down and stopping taking a lot longer than it usually does. See any of these? Do an inspection and change any brake pads required accordingly. When you order new ones, be sure to get the genuine article.
Why Buy Genuine OEM Brake Pads vs. Off-Brand?
They're manufactured compatible with your model specifically, whether it's a Scion SUV, a Toyota car or truck, or otherwise. That assurance, you may not get on the brake pads aftermarket.
