Oil Filters 101

What they do. They capture infiltrates -- those that build up in the oil while it lubricates engine parts - plus impurities left over from the oil production process. If your Toyota or Scion vehicle didn't have one, it's oil pump would end up stressed, its bearings would wear out, or worse -- all sorts of other engine problems would follow.

The parts of one. Other than the filter medium itself, it's comprised of a housing and a gasket. The oil filter housing is located in the engine bay, usually next to the engine cover; it contains the medium and connects it to the engine. The oil filter housing gasket, a rubber attachment, helps seal both an external and internal filter, keeping motor oil from spilling out of it. You can access the assembly in its entirety from underneath the compartment, most of the time. However, to do so, you may need to remove an undertray. Some models, however, have a filter that is accessible from above the bay. (Check your owner's manual for your vehicle's exact location, plus more info on this.)

When to replace one. Do it regularly. The best time is during every oil change or every other one. That means about every 3,000 miles, if not every 3 months. Otherwise, there are symptoms of failure that'll tell you it's time.

Signs of a bad one. Look for an engine oil warning light on the dashboard, often indicating a loss of oil pressure. Your vehicle's engine may also start to consistently underperform, or just not work as well. Inspect the oil filter if you see any of these, and swap it out if needed.
