Spark Plugs 101

What they do. They initiate the combustion process (by which fuel and oxygen burns, and power is produced) inside Toyota and Scion engines. (In fact, neither car nor truck, SUV nor van could start without them.) That process, called "spark ignition," begins when the vehicle's key turns in its ignition lock cylinder (or, in newer models, when push-button start is pressed).

How spark ignition works. It goes as follows. First, the ignition switch trips, and then the battery, starter motor, starter solenoid, and ignition coil conduct electricity to the plugs' leads. The air and gas that have been pulled into the engine via the air intake and fuel injectors then ignite, and the above-mentioned power's produced. The engine's pistons then start to pump, and its crankshaft starts to move. At that point, the many other parts that drive your ride get going.

Signs they're failing. All spark plugs eventually go bad owing to use and age. When that starts to happen, look for the following symptoms. For one, the plug's leads may corrode. Secondly, the leads may widen excessively. Third, their ability to conduct electricity may worsen, and the engine may start misfiring -- that is, if it doesn't fail completely. When spark plugs break, though, things get a lot worse: usually, severe damage to engine cylinders results.

When to replace them. Thankfully, just about all of those manufactured these days last for millions of ignitions. Many, you can use up to their recommended mileage limits -- about 100,000 miles. They just need to be replaced regularly, before reaching those limits, for best results. The question then becomes "which ones does my vehicle need?" That depends on the make and model you drive. Either way, choose genuine OE quality.
