There are two types of automotive brake systems these days: disc brakes and drum brakes. They share some common parts, such as master brake cylinders, one or more brake pistons, brake hoses, and brake lines. They work in the same manner, at least at first. With each type, pressing your foot against the brake pedal causes the master brake cylinder to send brake fluid through the lines and hoses. The differences between the two systems lies in what happens at the end of the line, and the brake parts involved.

The Differences Between Brake Systems

In a disc brake system, the pressure of the fluid causes the brake calipers to close brake pads onto your brake rotors to create the friction you need to slow down. With a drum brake system, the fluid makes brake shoes fasten to your brake drums to generate that same resistance that stops the rotation of your wheels.

Eventually, however, even the best brake components can begin to fail. If that happens, you'll want to replace the faulty part as soon as possible in order to ensure that you're driving safely and able to stop on command.
